The Geoscience Educational Opportunities & Career Oriented Research Experience (GEO CORE) grant is provided by the National Science Foundation and has been designed to provide second-year Suffolk County Community College geoscience majors with the skills and experience necessary to be successful at transfer universities or within the entry level job market for geoscience professionals. This program also provides academic and peer support to new and continuing geoscience majors and all students enrolled in geoscience courses.
Students selected as GEO CORE Ambassadors serve a one-year term and act as peer mentors within the Science Learning Centers or labs and must participate in all GEO CORE training programs.
$4,100.00 for the academic year.
During their term GEO CORE Ambassadors will be expected to provide six hours per week of on-campus tutoring either in a science lab or one of the science learning centers. In addition GEO CORE Ambassadors will also be required to take part in the CORE training programs. These programs will take place one a month during the fall and spring semester and provide in-depth training on specific skills related to geoscience careers. Additionally all GEO CORE Ambassadors will receive the 40 hr HAZWOPPER training during the January intersession.
Full-time students interested in applying to be a GEO CORE Ambassador must be entering their second year at SCCC, have a cumulative GPA of 3.2 and have taken at least two courses within the major field of study.
